These crispy air fryer sweet potato fries are so easy to make! They have great flavor and work well as an appetizer, a healthy snack or a side dish.

I am picky about my sweet potato fries and absolutely need them to be crispy! I love that sweet potatoes have extra nutrition in them, but it’s hard to get them as crispy as regular French fries!

Before air fryers, the only way to do this was to deep fry them, which adds a ton of oil to the equation. And we all know that roasting sweet potatoes on a sheet pan does not get them crispy. Air frying circulates hot air around the food, giving you crispy fries with less oil.

For this recipe, I only use simple ingredients for these Welch fries. Fresh sweet potato, olive oil and seasonings. The seasoning blend has just a *little* zip to it and adds some balance to the sweetness of the potato.

I use an 8-quart Ninja Foodi Air Fryer, and do have to do two batches, usually. This will depend on the size of your air fryer, and of your potato(es)!

Recipe Modifications

Try cutting your potato into sweet potato wedges and add 1-2 minutes of cooking time.

Or, sweet potato cubes and reduce the cook time by 1-2 cooking time.

Instead of olive oil, any neutral tasting oil will work. I also like avocado oil.

I do not recommend that you line your air fryer basket with parchment paper or aluminum foil. While it makes for easy clean-up, it blocks the air flow that helps your homemade fries get crispy!

Storing Leftover Sweet Potato Fries

Store leftover fries in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven on a baking sheet, or in the air fryer for best results.

Ingredients

  • 1 sweet potato, large
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the spices:

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon corn starch
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut your sweet potato into small fry shaped portions, then pat the cut sweet potatoes with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  • Place in a large bowl and pour olive oil over the fries and toss to coat.
  • In a small bowl, add garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
  • Add the spice mix to the sweet potato fries, and toss to combine.
  • Spray the bottom of the air fryer basket with nonstick spray and place the sweet potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  • Air fry for 8 minutes, pause and shake the basket tray halfway through frying. At this time, spray the fries with cooking spray to help them turn golden brown.
  • The cook times will vary depending on your air fryer, so keep a close eye on them the last few minutes to make sure they don’t burn.
  • Serve warm with your favorite sauce!

Notes

Depending on the size of your air fryer basket, you may need to make a second batch. Your first batch will usually need more cook time than the 2nd, 3rd, etc.
You can omit the cornstarch if you don’t have any, but it’s the secret ingredient for making the outsides of the fries extra crispy!
