This sweet and savory smoked ham has a super special bourbon and mustard glaze!
I’ve always been fascinated by holiday food traditions, and how they vary from family to family. My husband’s family always deviates from the norm, having a shrimp boil or steaks for holiday dinner. My family tends more towards the traditional, with a ham or roast and all of the standard fixings. I think because of that, I lean more towards traditional food for holiday dinners, but I do like to liven it up a bit! My Mom makes a super good ham for the holidays, using either whole grain or horseradish mustard and brown sugar for the glaze. I decided to spice up her traditional glaze with this Cherry Smoked Ham with Mustard Bourbon glaze recipe, perfect for a fun holiday gathering with friends!
Since Craig and I moved to Kansas City, we’ve started some new holiday traditions with friends. Almost every year, with either have a “Friendsgiving” or “Friendsmas” celebration, with 10-15 of our closest friends getting together for good food and good times around the holidays! Before we had kids, this was typically a pretty rowdy event, but now that we’re all getting older (and wiser), we focus a lot more on good food and good times together! Typically, the host makes the entree for the meal, like this ham, and everyone else brings a side.
To make this ham recipe, I went to get my ingredients at Walmart, and picked up a Premium HORMEL® CURE 81® Cherrywood Ham. The ham I chose was the perfect size, around 8 pounds, for a small get together with friends. You want to plan on about 3/4 a pound of ham per person if you’re purchasing a bone-in ham like this. These hams are spiral sliced and precooked, so they are incredibly easy to prepare. All you need to do is slowly heat it up in the oven, and dress it with any glazing or spices you desire. We loved the smoked cherry flavor in this ham, and it was delicious by itself! But the sweetness of this glaze with the smokiness of the bourbon takes it to the next level.
Sweet and smoky ham with a mustard and bourbon glaze.
- 1 Hormel Cure 81 CherrywoodHam (mine was around 8 pounds)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 3 tbsp kentucky bourbon
- 1/4 cup whole grain/stone ground mustard
- Bake ham according to package instructions. I tented loosely with aluminum foil to keep moist.
- Combine brown sugar, bourbon and mustard in microwave safe dish. Microwave for 1.5 minutes, then stir to combine.
- Twenty minutes before ham is finished baking, lightly baste brown sugar mixture onto ham and return to oven.
- Slice ham along the bone, serve.while warm with extra glaze.
