Green bean casserole is a classic holiday side dish, combining fresh green beans (or canned), cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce and French fried onions. It’s popular because it’s so easy to make, and it seems like everyone has a favorite green bean casserole recipe!

In this recipe, you have the options of using fresh beans, but you can use frozen or canned green beans as well. Any of these options will give you tender green bean!

In this recipe, I make the classic casserole recipe, then take just a few extra steps to make it super special. I did use a box of turkey stuffing, but feel free to use the stuffing you have!

You can make this recipe ahead of time, but wait to add the French Fried Onions until just before baking.

Substitutions:

This easy recipe has several possible substitutions since it uses common ingredients. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Substitute Cream of Chicken Soup for Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • Substitute turkey broth or vegetable broth for the chicken stock
  • I used a turkey stuffing mix, but any flavor stuffing (cornbread, chicken, sage) would be delicious.
  • Soy sauce is a perfect sub for Worcestershire sauce.
  • Substitute frozen or canned green beans, but I would not recommend using French cut beans.

Additions:

If you want to make your green bean casserole super special, consider one of the following additions:

  • Add a pound of sliced fresh mushrooms to the green bean mixture.
  • Add cooked, crumbled bacon to the crunchy fried onion topping for
  • Add 1/2 to 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese or parmesan cheese to the green beans for a cheesy kick.
  • Cut an onion into slices and sauté for 2-3 minutes in a tablespoon of butter. Add sautéed onions to the green bean mixture.

Ingredients

  • 1 10.5 ounce can Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups green beans, fresh, canned or frozen

For the topping:

  • 1.5 cups chicken stock or chicken broth
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 6 ounce box stuffing mix
  • 1.5 cups French fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder and black pepper. Stir well to combine.
  3. Next, stir in the green beans. Then, add half of the crispy fried onions.
  4. Grease a 9x13'' baking dish and pour green bean mixture into the dish.
  5. In a microwave sauce bowl, microwave butter for 30-60 seconds until the butter is melted.
  6. To the bowl, add chicken stock and stuffing mix. Stir until the stuffing is thoroughly moistened.
  7. Spread the stuffing mixture over the top of the green bean mixture, gently pressing down into the green beans in pockets.
  8. Top with the remaining French fried onions.
  9. In another large bowl microwave the butter and chicken stock in 30 second intervals until the butter is melted.
  10. Bake for 40 minutes, until it's hot and bubbly. If the topping starts to brown, cover with aluminum foil.
  11. Remove from oven and serve warm!
