Recipe Substitutions:
I think the best recipe is the one that you already have the ingredients for at home! With that said, here are some ideas for ingredient subsitutions and additions:
- Substitute brownie mix for the chocolate cake mix.
- You can absolute mix in fresh fruit! Just make sure to remove the pits and stems off your fresh cherries.
- Add a handful of chocolate chips
- I like to use Devil’s Food cake mix, but any style of chocolate cake mix flavor will work!

How to make Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake
First, lightly grease a 9×13” pan.
Then, add the two cans of cherry pie filling. I chose the standard cherry flavor, but you could also choose the darker sweet cherry filling.
Next, layer a box of chocolate cake mix over the cherry pie filling. Then, add the pats of butter. They will melt as the chocolate cherry cobbler bakes.
Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is bubbly. Towards the end of the bake time, check every few minutes to see if the cake is bubbling.
Allow the chocolate cherry cake to cool for at least 10 minutes before cutting, Using a wide, flat spatula or spoon will help you cut and scoop slices out. This black forest dump cake is very, very gooey! That’s a good thing, but be prepared to carefully cut and remove your pieces.
