Air Fryer Chicken Cordon Bleu (Easy Sauce Recipe)
Air Fryer Chicken Cordon Bleu is an easy, air fryer chicken dinner for your family! Ready in 30 minutes with a three-ingredient sauce.
This delicious meal was a total hit with my entire family, even my son! I would consider this air fryer recipe an “intermediate” recipe, because you do have to take a few steps to prepare your chicken. But it’s totally worth it! The end result of this air fryer chicken cordon bleu is chicken fried to golden perfection, stuffed with melted cheese and ham.
Chicken cordon bleu is a classic chicken dish that is perfect for special occasions! If you haven’t had it, it is typically made with deep frying the tender chicken breast.
This air fried version of the recipe makes it a bit lighter, and appropriate for dinner any time with a side dish like these savory Air Fryer Tomatoes.
Recipe Substitutions and Additions
The best recipe is one that uses what you have on hand at home! I have a few ideas for ingredient swaps, below:
- Yes, you can use boneless skinless chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts! You can also pre-purchase thin sliced chicken breasts at the grocery store to save yourself the effort of having to pound out the chicken breasts.
- Instead of the Swiss cheese slices, try any mild flavored cheese, or aged Parmesan cheese.
- Instead of the slices of ham, try prosciutto. This recipe is a great way to use up leftover ham, too!
- I have two options for the breading in the recipe card, below! I really like to use panko breadcrumbs whenever possible, but you can absolutely use normal breadcrumbs.
Tips for Making Air Fryer Chicken Cordon Bleu at Home
- Pound your chicken breast out thin. Or you can save time by buying thin sliced chicken breasts at the store.
- You can use deli ham or leftover ham. I used leftover ham from Thanksgiving, and it was delicious!
- Swiss cheese is traditional, but most types of sliced cheese would be delicious! Feel free to substitute for what you have on hand.
- Use Louisiana Fish Fry Air Fryer Chicken Coating for a perfectly crunchy coating with no fuss.
- Pin your chicken, ham and cheese roll together with as many toothpicks as you need. You will remove the toothpicks after air frying.
- Turn your chicken every 10 minutes for even air frying

How to Make an Easy Mornay Sauce for Chicken Cordon Bleu
Chicken Cordon Bleu is traditionally topped with mornay sauce, a classic, creamy French sauce. I created a “cheater” mornay sauce made with just three ingredients. To make this easy mornay sauce, you’ll combine equal parts sour cream and cream of chicken soup with a hearty squeeze of lemon juice.
After you taste the sauce, you may want to add additional lemon juice, fresh herbs or garlic! The creamy, acidic flavor of this sauce is the perfect complement to your Air Fryer Chicken Cordon Bleu.
