This easy no bake chocolate cream pie is rich, creamy, and chocolatey without any hassle! Made with instant pudding mix, cream cheese, and Cool Whip, this simple chocolate dessert is perfect for potlucks, barbecues, and holiday gatherings.

Chocolate pie is my son’s favorite, so it’s something I’ve made a lot of over the years! I love a good chocolate cream pie, but if I’m being honest with you, custard frustrates me sometimes. It can really be temperamental! I came up with this easy “cheater” recipe for chocolate cream pie last year, and have been making it ever since.

This is a no bake chocolate cream pie, which means you only have about 10 minutes of hands-on time to make the creamy filling. Then, you’re done! No oven, no stovetop, no babysitting the custard. The chocolate filling is still super creamy and rich, just like it was made from scratch!

Well, it does need to chill in the fridge for a few hours before serving, but overall, it’s very fast to whip this up.

I used store-bought pie crust, but feel free to use your favorite homemade crust if that’s what you prefer.

Recipe Substitutions

I’m including some ingredient substitutions and swaps for you to make this pie your own! Here’s a few suggestions:

  • I used standard chocolate pudding mix, but you’re welcome to use a dark chocolate pudding mix for a richer flavor.
  • Oreo crust? Yes, yes, it’s delicious. Definitely a welcome substitution instead of graham cracker.
  • I think it’s fun to sprinkle chocolate chips on top. You could also do chocolate shavings or crushed Oreos.
  • Feel free to add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract to the chocolate filling.

Serving Suggestions

I love to serve this Creamy Chocolate Pie at the end of a barbecue or potluck! If you’d like more pie recipes to the mix, consider my Gooseberry Pie, Banana Cream Pie, or Blackberry Custard Pie.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat together cream cheese and powdered sugar.
  • In a separate small bowl, whisk together the chocolate pudding mix and milk.
  • Add the chocolate pudding and 1 cup of the cool whip to the cream cheese mixture, mixing until well combined, scraping the sides as needed. I like to use a whisk to press up any lumps.
  • Pour the pie mixture into the crust.
  • Cover with a piece of plastic wrap, and allow the pie to chill for 4 hours, or overnight.
  • Before serving, top with an extra 1 cup of cool whip and smooth out evenly.
  • Also, top with chocolate chips if desired.

Notes

It’s actually pretty easy to make your own graham cracker crust if you need to! Just pulse graham crackers in a food processor until you have 1.5 cups of crumbs. To the crumbs, add a tablespoon of sugar for a little sweetness, and 7 tablespoons of melted butter. Stir to moisten the crumbs, then press them into a pie tin.
