Homemade Blackened Seasoning
It’s easy to make blackened seasoning at home! This recipe just has a few spices and is perfect on chicken or shrimp.
The first time I tried blackened seasoning was actually on a trip to New Orleans, which is appropriate because it originates from creole cooking n New Orleans! I did not grow up eating spicy food, so the bold flavor of blackened seasoning was absolutely a shock to my taste buds, but a welcome one. But, it was a welcome one!
This homemade blackened seasoning is perfect on almost any protein, especially pork and chicken. It’s also delicious on seafood, especially shrimp.

In my opinion, the most perfect use for this homemade spice blend is on blackened chicken paired with a rich cream sauce, like I make in this Blackened Chicken Alfredo recipe.
You might be wondering, what’s the difference between blackened seasoning and Cajun seasoning? Well, there isn’t much of one. They actually have most of the same spices! But, there are slightly different amounts of those spices and you’ll notice that blackened seasoning tends to be a little darker in appearance, hence the name. I also find that Cajun seasoning usually has thyme and a bit more herbs in the mix.

Serving Suggestions
This homemade seasoning blend is perfect on grilled chicken, shrimp or pork chops. It’s even wonderful sprinkled on roasted vegetables, especially baked asparagus!
Storing Leftover Blackened Seasoning
If you have leftover seasoning, store it in an airtight container at room temperature. It will store best in a non-humid environment.
