Viral Onion Boil (Baked Onion Recipe)
This Onion Boil recipe is a viral sensation, for good reason! It’s a delicious baked onion with butter and seasonings. The perfect affordable (and impressive) side dish.
Have you seen the viral onion boil recipe? It’s all over TikTok and Pinterest right now! It seems to be based on the same flavors as classic seafood boils, with a twist. Even the name is a bit confusing! “Onion boil” is absolutely a misnomer, because this is actually a baked onion recipe.
I have a healthy skepticism for viral recipes because I’ve been watching food trends for over a decade. And truly, they come and they go! But I decided to try this recipe because I loved that it is an inexpensive and novel way to enjoy simple sweet onions as a side dish. I think we’re all looking to save some money on groceries right now.

In this stuffed baked onion recipe, I hollow out the middle of the onion, fill it with butter and seasonings, wrap it in foil and bake it low and slow for 90 minutes.
The result? This baked onion turns out soft and jammy and the flavors are absolutely unreal.

Recipe Modifications
I have kept this recipe fairly simple, just an onion, butter and seasonings! But there are plenty of things you can add to the mix. Here are a few ideas:
- 1/8 cup cheese (pick your favorite)
- 1/8 cup diced, cooked protein. Chicken, crab or shrimp are my picks!
I prefer a low-salt Cajun seasoning for this recipe.

Serving Suggestions
While the onion roasts, you have plenty of time to grill steaks or burgers. Serve with my grinder salad or artichoke salad for extra veggies!

I hope that you are as pleasantly surprised by this inventive onion recipe as I am! If you give it a try, please let me know how it went in the comments below.

Viral Onion Boil (Baked Onion Recipe)
Ingredients
- 1 sweet onion, large
- 6 tablespoons butter, unsalted
- 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon lemon pepper seasoning
- ½ teaspoon parsley
- ½ teaspoon Cajun seasoning
- 1 teaspoon chili crisp, optional, for garnish
Equipment
- melon baller to scoop out the inside of the onion
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Cut both ends off the onion. Peel it and core out the center using a melon baller or a spoon.
- Stuff 2 tablespoons of butter in the center of the onion. Place on a sheet of aluminum foil.
- Melt the remaining butter in a microwave safe bowl. Add all of the seasonings and whisk until well combined. Pour into the center of the onion. Wrap the onion tightly in aluminum foil to keep the juices in.
- Bake for 90 minutes with a baking sheet under it to catch any juices that leak.
- Remove and allow to cool for 5 minutes before unwrapping. Unwrap, and top with (optional) chili crisp. Drizzle with leftover butter mixture and juices from the foil.
- I like to serve on a dinner plate, using a steak knife to cut it into four equal pieces for serving. Serve warm.
