Wondering if Hungryroot is a good fit for your family? Read my honest review of our week eating only Hungryroot foods!

Hungryroot is different than other meal delivery services because it can include all of the grocery items you need for the week, including your apples, bananas and snacks in addition to providing the ingredients and recipes for your meals.

I think I’ve tried every meal kit service out there, so given how different their service was, I was eager to give it a try and share this Hungryroot review with you!

How Hungryroot Works

When you sign up for Hungryroot, they will quiz you to ask your dietary preference, food allergies and what ingredients to avoid. For example, if there are certain proteins and vegetables you don’t care for, you can let them know.

Also, if you have preferences like gluten-free, dairy-free, plant-based or vegan, you will be able to indicate this upfront.

After you complete the survey, a weekly meal plan of Hungryroot meals will be generated for you based on your preferences. But you aren’t locked in with the meal plan they suggest. You can delete items that you don’t care for and replace them with meals that better fit your taste.

I liked that I was able to indicate how many breakfasts, lunch and dinners I wanted, and change the serving size for each individual meal.

Hungryroot Delivery

Once you choose your meals, you are able to schedule a future date for your delivery!

The box arrived with ample ice packs and no issues with delivery or delays. Everything was still cold, even though the box arrived early in the day, and I wasn’t able to unpack it until after work.

My Meal Plan

I did not choose any breakfast items. For lunch, I chose:

  • Ceasar Salad with Salmon Filets (2 servings)
  • Citrus Salad with pre-cooked Chicken Breasts (2 servings)

For dinner, I chose the following recipes:

  • Butter Chicken Meatballs with Rice and Broccoli
  • Honey Garlic Beef Stir Fry
  • Pork Chops Piccata with Veggies

The preferences I indicated were for high-protein meals and minimal meal prep, and these choices delivered on both of those preferences.

I did supplement the pork chop meal with baked sweet potatoes, because my husband and I had both worked out that day and were very hungry at dinner time! Otherwise, I served the meals as designed.

Hungryroot Pros

Overall, we really enjoyed our shipment. Here are the positives that my family agreed on for our week of Hungryroot meals:

  • Time Savings: You can completely avoid the grocery store since snacks, fruit and other produce can be added. I did not have to go to the grocery store until the weekend, which was a big bonus for me.
  • Healthier: We all agreed that we ate much healthier than normal this week. My husband particularly commented on the variety of produce we were provided. Personally, I loved all of the salad options since that is my go-to for lunch.
  • No prep work: There was very little prep work for any of the recipes sent. Most of the meal kits I’ve tried have involved quite a bit of chopping and dicing! That was not the case here!
  • Variety: We enjoyed a variety of flavors for dinner. We had an Italian inspired dish, honey garlic stir-fry, and Indian-inspired recipe.
  • Snacks included: I had a LOT of fun picking out our snacks for the week, and it was super nice to have convenient and healthy snacks already in the fridge.
  • Flexibility: You are not locked into any number of weeks and can skip any weeks you don’t need.
  • Website: I found their filtering and search to be super robust. For example, you can filter by type of protein, or meal type (pasta, bowls, meat + side, salads, etc.)
  • Cookie Dough: Maybe it’s a bit ridiculous for this to have its own bullet point, but I loved the chickpea cookie dough. This was included for me as a freebie promotion, but it’s delicious to eat raw or make cookies with!
  • Kid-Friendly Options: If you choose a dinner recipe that you know your kiddos won’t like, there are add-on options of kid-friendly meals or items you can add to your cart to make sure they have something they like to eat.

Hungryroot Cons

Our week eating Hungryroot meals was mostly positive, but of course, this Hungryroot review would not be complete if I didn’t let you know about a few possible downsides:

  • Packaging: Because most of our produce was pre-cut, I felt that there was a lot of packaging involved. But, we had significantly less food waste for the week than normal, so that may be a trade-off that you will have to weigh!
  • More expensive seafood: Premium proteins like shellfish and salmon are higher than other proteins, meaning this may not be a great option if you’re a pescatarian.
  • Remembering to plan weeks: If you’re forgetful (like me), you may need to set a remind to skip weeks where the service isn’t needed.
  • Price: If you shop primarily at discount stores like Aldi, you may find this service more expensive than your normal grocery bill. However, if you’re frequent grocery shops like Sprouts or Whole Foods and/or buy primarily organic foods, I actually think Hungryroot could provide good savings for you.

Overall Opinion – Hungryroot Review

I have tried almost every meal kit service available, as well as all of the grocery delivery services that operate in my area.

Considering that, what is my overall opinion of the Hungryroot subscription?

Overall, I think it’s a very good option for families that prioritize both convenience and eating healthy. The price was in the same ballpark as our normal grocery expense for the week, we were able to try new things and ate a ton of high-quality produce and proteins.

While I won’t use Hungryroot every week, I will be using it for weeks that we are exceptionally busy, and I would like to completely skip the grocery shopping and meal planning for that week.
