Ingredients

  • 1 whole orange (or orange peels)
  • 1 apple
  • 1 cup fresh cranberries
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 3-5 whole cloves
  • 1 whole star anise
  • water

Instructions

  1. Slice the orange and apple into rounds.
  2. Place the sliced orange and apple to a medium pot or saucepan. Add the cranberries, cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise.
  3. Pour enough water into the pot to just almost cover all of the ingredients in the pot.
  4. Heat the potpourri over low heat on a back burner. Simmer on low heat for up to 3 hours, adding more water as the water gets low.
  5. Check the simmering potpourri often to keep the water level up. If all of the water evaporates and is not replaced, the potpourri will burn.
  6. You can also put this in the crockpot or slow cooker to free up stove top space.

There are many things you can add to this recipe to make it smell extra wonderful! Try fresh rosemary, a dash or vanilla extract or almond extract, bay leaves, fresh ginger, nutmeg, pine needles and essential oils.
