It’s unbelievably simple to make homemade hot chocolate at home with just a few ingredients that you can keep on hand. A benefit of making homemade hot chocolate is you can control how rich your hot chocolate is! If you like your hot chocolate super rich like I do, you can add a bit more cocoa powder and marshmallows.

Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe

I love to make hot chocolate for guests over the holidays! To make homemade hot chocolate, you just need a few simple ingredients:

  • Milk (or water)
  • Sugar
  • Unsweetened coca powder
  • Homemade or store-bought marshmallows

Cocoa Powder is the most critical part to making luscious, dreamy hot chocolate. For this homemade hot chocolate, make sure you choose high quality cocoa powder!

As always, when you make something from scratch, it’s easy to modify and add to it!

Here are some of my favorite additions to this wonderful Homemade Hot Chocolate recipe:

  • Peppermint Hot Chocolate: Add 1/8 tsp peppermint extract for each individual serving and whisk to combine before serving.
  • Hot Chocolate Mocha: Add 4 ounces of freshly brewed coffee for each individual serving and whisk to combine well. This is wonderful topped with whipped cream.
  • Boozy Hot Chocolate: Add 1 ounce of Irish Cream liquor for each individual serving and whisk to combine. This is also wonderful topped with whipped cream.
  • Mexican Hot Chocolate: Add a pinch of cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne.

Old Fashioned Hot Chocolate

Yield: 4 servings

Total Time: 10 minutes

Once you make hot chocolate from scratch, you'll never go back to a mix! It's way easier than you think.

Ingredients

  • 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 cups milk

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, mix SCHARFFEN BERGER Unsweetened 100% cacao dark chocolate cocoa powder and sugar with a few tablespoons of milk to make a paste.
  2. Stir in the rest of the milk and vanilla extract, and whisk to combine.
  3. Cook over low heat, stirring continuously, until hot. Do not allow to boil.
  4. Serve hot, topped with marshmallows or whipped cream.
