Learn how to plan an amazing summer camp at home this year with Quaker Chewy!
This post is sponsored by Quaker® Chewy, but all opinions are my own.
It's no secret that 2020 has thrown most of us parents for a loop. My little family had big plans for summer this year! We planned to send my son to two summer camps; one for music and one for block building. The three of us were planning a beach vacation and visit to see extended family, and a few trips to see friends!
But, towards the end of spring, it was clear that many of our plans for summer wouldn't work. We needed to adjust and do what we could to make summer at home fun for our son!
I talked with other parents to brainstorm ideas for creating a summer camp atmosphere at home this summer.
With some work and planning, I've created a great summer of memories for our familybut I've certainly learned a few things along the way! Here are some tips to create an AWESOME summer camp experience at home this year:
- Just Add Water:
The primary thing I've learned is this; if there's water, kids are happy! Whether it's a nearby lake or pool, or a backyard sprinkler or water slide, make sure that water is a part of the day.
- Plan Activities At Home:
The options are endless, but the key is to get them excited AHEAD of time! Kids can find enjoyment in any activity, if it's made to feel special. Here are a few activities that we've had fun with:
- Make your own ice cream sundaes and adding crushed up Quaker Chewy bars on top!
- Design your own obstacle courses (indoor or outdoor)
- Design a scavenger hunt for your friends (indoor or outdoor)
- Set up a station to paint or color; paint for the holidays (like Labor Day) or go outside and paint what you see
- Decorate cookies or cupcakes
- Help with gardening (planting, harvesting, watering, pulling weeds)
- "Movie night" with snacks
- A backyard field day with water balloons, and races
- Plan A Few Activities Away:
Traditional family friendly options like pools and arcades may not be an option, but we got creative! Here are a few activities I did to get out of the house while maintaining social distancing requirements:
- Berry picking
- Hiking or nature areas
- Outdoor picnics
- Take bicycles somewhere flat (and empty) to ride
- Bring balls to a flat field for soccer
- Stock up on snacks:
When families are playing hard, they want snacks! But they can also be picky eaters. Here are a few crowd favorites from this summer:
- Watermelon and fresh summer berries
- Cut vegetables and ranch dip
- String cheese
- Quaker Chewy bars
I love giving kids Quaker Chewy bars in their classic flavors because they're made with at least 9 grams of 100% whole grains, at least 9 grams per bar and other delicious ingredients! Their classic flavor also has 100 calories or less per bar and no artificial flavors or added colors. Plus, I love the convenience of being able to bring them with me, since kids get hungry unexpectedly!
With a little planning, and a lot of great snacks, you can have a great summer camp at home this year! I believe that nothing should stop playtime, and so does Quaker Chewy, which is why they put together Camp Chewy!
