This is my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe! This recipe makes chewier cookies, studded with chocolate chips and walnuts.

All of the years of my life, I’ve been on the hunt for chocolate chip cookies that I like better than these delicious chocolate chip walnut cookies. These chewy cookies are my mom’s recipe, and to me, they’re the absolute perfect chocolate chip cookie!

All of her grandkids (and kids) beg her to make a huge batch of these easy chocolate chip walnut cookies for Christmas! They are absolutely my family’s favorite cookies, and they’re always gone in a flash.

We manage to eat an embarrassing number of cookies in the afternoon that we spend together celebrating the holiday. But I never have any regrets about it!

I think that classic chocolate chip cookies are the perfect cookies! Why? Well, I prefer a chewy cookie with golden brown crispy edges and a nice, gooey center! I also look for a good mix of sweet and salty flavor. This great recipe manages to achieve all of these things!

Recipe Substitutions:

There are a few ingredient substitutions you can make for these chewy chocolate chip walnut cookies! Here are a few that I know will work:

  • Substitute brown sugar for white sugar, and vice versa.
  • Feel free to use chocolate chunks, dark chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips or white chocolate chips for the semi-sweet chocolate chip morsels.
  • You can substitute unsalted butter for the vegetable shortening, but it tends to make the cookies a little puffier and they will lose the chewy texture. Make sure not to use cold butter. Allow it to come close to room temperature before mixing.
  • Substitute chopped pecans, almonds or your favorite nut for the crunchy walnuts. Or omit the nuts altogether!
  • Another substitution idea for the walnuts is 1/2 cup of oats! An easy way to make oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and add some fun texture to your cookies.

Serving Suggestions:

What more do you need than a big glass of cold milk to go with the perfect cookie?

But really, if you’re putting together a cookie tray, I’m a huge fan of serving these cookies alongside The Best Christmas Cracker Candy or Christmas Sugar Cookie Bars! They’re the perfect combination for a festive tray of treats.

Storing Leftover Walnut Chocolate Chip Cookies:

Keep leftover cookies in an airtight container on the counter for up to a week.

The cookies will get stale as the days pass, but I’ve found you can revive them with a short warm-up in the microwave (10-20 seconds), and a quick dunk in a glass of cold milk!
