Ah, summer! I love you! And so does my family. We live in a small lake community, so we’ve been soaking it in with time at the neighborhood parks, on the boat and at our sand beach. My son caught his first fish, attended his first soccer game, and took his first boat ride! He’s so active and loves all the activities that summer brings. Summer is a whole different ballgame when it comes to keeping my son fed and satiated. He’s always hungry!
Because of this, I’ve really had to step up my game with his protein and we’ve increased his low-fat milk intake to help with this. I’ve always loved giving milk to my son because it’s a good and natural source of protein, providing him 8 grams of protein in every 8 ounce glass. Every morning, I start Eli off with a glass of milk and a hearty breakfast so that he has the energy he needs. We switch up the food often. If he had his way, he would eat pancakes every single day! But we also serve him mini avocado muffins, egg muffins and oatmeal balls. He loves them all, and always asks for his milk to wash it down.
For my kiddo, summer means extra play time and tons of snacks! We’re fortunate that summer is relatively stress free. But unfortunately, more than 22 million kids are faced with lack of access to free or reduced-price meal programs when they’re home for the summer. The Feeding America® network food banks help bridge the gap during the summer season, but fresh milk is one of the most requested, but least received items at these food banks. This means that kiddos in our own neighborhoods and cities may be missing out on milk this summer. So, what can we do to help? One easy way to contribute is by donating to The Great American Milk Drive this summer. A donation as little as $5 can deliver a gallon of fresh milk to the kids who need it most! To date, this program has provided more than 12 million servings of milk to families across the country.
If you’d like to help out, remember that you can donate to the Great American Milk Drive this summer. You can also share this post on Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #milkdrive, and $1 will be donated for the purchase of milk for food banks. Let’s band together to help out the children in our communities who are going without milk and other nutritious foods this summer!
In addition to donating to local food banks, Milk Life is giving away several prize packs to lucky readers! You can enter below until July 8th!
